Last Friday, December 11th, our Traveling Youth Lotus Group performed their second show of the season with the LAVA Brooklyn junior company at their annual showcase “LAVA Mix.” For some of the dancers, this was their fist performance. The choreography was created by Lotus Creations Artistic Director Jevon “Jerzey” Goldson to a mashup including "All for You", "Don't Panic", "Pleasure Principle", "Get Up", and "WTF." The young performers grooved to the music with enough swag to win several applauses and loud cheers during their performance!
The LAVA Brooklyn junior company, LAVA Magma, performed an engaging choreography using vocabulary from acrobatics, contemporary dance, and other dance forms. Their young dancers were truly creative and versatile - they lifted each other onto their shoulders, played the piano and sang, and at one point a Magma boy balanced a long peacock feather on his nose for a good one minute.
LAVA Brooklyn is a nonprofit dance organization founded by Sarah Johnson in 2000 and an OBIE and Bessie awards recipient. LAVA has performed in New York City at P.S. 122, The Kitchen, The Flea Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, The Joyce Theater, Movement Research at Judson Church, The New Victory Theater, Celebrate Brooklyn, Symphony Space, and Dixon Place. In addition to creating and performing original theatrical productions, the troupe offers classes in their unique form of acrobatics and dance at their Brooklyn Studio on 524 Bergen Street, Brooklyn. This beautifully decorated studio has a nice wooden floor, collections of CDs and books, and honors authors and artists from different backgrounds in its wall posters and pictures.
